Exploring energy savings

The opportunities for building efficiency improvements are quite dramatic, stated one of the presenters at this year’s ORAC conference. Speaking to a group of the 186 guests in attendance at the April event in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., Brett Freeman (pictured) of Yorkland Controls said, “Less than 30 per cent of 25,000 square-foot or smaller buildings have temperature setbacks.” This presents an opportunity to the contractor who can deliver a simple, yet cost-effective controls package.

Watching our productivity

“We are in pretty good shape in Canada. We’ve bounced back better than other places,” proclaimed Amanda Lang, senior business correspondent for CBC News and co-host of The Lang and O'Leary Exchange, during the most recent CIPH Ontario Region business meeting, held in Mississauga in May.

She expressed optimism for how the Canadian economy has reacted to the challenges faced on a global scale, but warned that there are things that could cause a return to recession.

PARTING SHOT

A hot time Down Under

Crikey! Australian plumber Bruce Warburton found out the hard way just how flammable some eco-friendly, straw-walled homes can be. Ian Reed, the homeowner who contracted Warburton to work on his home in Orange, New South Wales, neglected to tell the plumber about the building materials used, nor that he had previously hand-stuffed loose straw into a gap in his bathroom wall.

After plumbing the kitchen, Warburton resumed work in the bathroom, where things took a decided turn for the worse. While soldering pipes in the lavatory, the loose straw “ignited and flew straight up like a chimney,” Warburton explained to the court in an ensuing lawsuit filed by Reed. Regrettably, the house burnt down.

The judge awarded Reed half of the damages he sought, $105,000, because he failed to inform Warburton of the working conditions he was confronted with. Whether it is straw, wood, or steel constructed walls, this story serves as an important reminder to always maintain best safety practices while soldering.
