CIPH member carries torch
A
member of the CIPH family recently brought a
journey full circle, carrying the Olympic torch for the second time in his life.
Kris Clarke, IT system manager for
Bird-Stairs, a distributor of plumbing
and electrical products in Atlantic Canada, helped the torch make its way
through Saint John, N.B., during its eastern swing. It marked a
twice-in-a-lifetime moment for Clarke, who also carried the torch as a
12-year-old, when it toured through Fredericton on its way to the 1988 Calgary
Games.
iStanley
Stanley
Works has joined the digital fray, recently introducing an iPhone application
that mimics the company's levels. Using the iPhone's accelerometer, which
provides the device an understanding of where it is in space, the Stanley Level
iPhone app works in the same way as a traditional level. Check out full details
about the application at
stanleyworks.com, or download it from
Apple's App
Store.

PARTING SHOTS
Every
once in a blue moon, a leaky pipe can be a good thing. Unless of course you're
running an international counterfeiting scheme from the source of the leak.
In December 2006, a janitor at a high-rise apartment building in downtown
Montreal entered a seventh-floor unit in order to repair a leak. When he went
looking for the shutoff valve so he could repair the broken pipe, he found a
counterfeiting factory of sorts – complete with phony credit cards, fake
passports and firearm-acquisition certificates.
The janitor, a former cop, had unintentionally stumbled upon an international
forgery scheme. The unit's tenant, an Algerian immigrant, initially served just
eight months jail time. But the ensuing national security investigation, one of
the biggest in history, led to the Mounted Police arresting 32 people last
November - including the tenant.
